In order to become a dentist, I acquired the following certificates:
- BS - Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA
- DDS - Medical College of VA School of Dentistry
- GP Residency - Veteran's Administration Medical College in D.C.
- Fellowship in Sedation Dentistry
As a dentist, I continuously strive to know the newest procedures and be familiar with the most advanced dental technology. I am currently pursuing a fellowship through the Academy of General Dentistry, and have attained my Oral Sedation certification through the Dental Organization of Conscious Sedation. I have also participated in many hours of continuing education in all phases of general dentistry.
I have worked very hard for many years to become a competent and compassionate dentist. Our team is composed of a group of caring, friendly individuals who go above and beyond to ensure your visit is as comfortable as possible. It is an honor to work with such talented people and to serve such a warm and wonderful community.
Welcome! I am Dr. Diaz. I am so proud to say that I have been practicing dentistry for more than 25 years and I am very passionate about my work. My mission is to thrive with compassion, dedication and experience. The best part of dentistry is the ability to establish a lasting relationship with my patients, keeping them healthy and happy.
For my education, I received my undergraduate degree at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus and then attended the school of dentistry at the University of Puerto Rico and received my DMD in 1982. I am a certified Invisalign provider and I am also a member of the Virginia Academy of General Dentistry. Because I want to give my patients the best dental care, I regularly attend courses in continuing education. Most recently I attended implant courses offered by the Northern Virginia Dental Society and by the University of Pennsylvania Dental School.
I have been married for almost 30 years to another dentist, Carlos Aponte and have two beautiful children. My son Carlos is currently in Law School and my daughter, Cristina recently graduated from college and completed a Computer Animation Bachelor's Degree.
I am a breast cancer survivor and the love and support from my family, friends and patients has been a driving force in my recovery. I love to exercise and my favorite is the spinning classes. I also love to travel with my family and learn about other countries and their cultures.
I joined the team following five years of service in the United States Navy and a year of private practice in sunny San Diego, CA.. As a dental officer in the Navy I was first stationed in North Chicago, IL, providing dental care to our young Sailors in boot camp, many of whom had never seen a dentist before.
Following my time in North Chicago, I was stationed with the Marines in Okinawa, Japan a small subtropical Japanese island east of Taiwan. While in Okinawa, I was attached to the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), an amphibious battle group that led humanitarian and joint training operationsin the region and responded to disaster relief calls. I led humanitarian dentistry missions in Thailand and the Philippines, providing dental care to the local populace with limited access to dental care. I also performed dental care underway for our Marines and Sailors aboard the USS Denver LPD-9, an amphibious ship that could ballast up and down to deploy smaller ships and hovercraft from the back, and the USS Essex LHD-2, another amphibious ship that additionally functioned as helicopter and harrier aircraft carrier and a floating hospital.
After Okinawa, I was fortunate enough to be stationed in beautiful San Diego, CA.. While stationed in San Diego, I provided care to our Sailors assigned to smaller ships like destroyers and cruisers without designated dentists and also cared for the US Navy Seals on Coronado Island.
Following my separation from the service, I practiced in San Diego for a year prior to moving to Virginia and joing the team at Railroad Dental Associates. From my time in the Navy and moving around in my youth, I appreciate how hard it is to find a dentist you enjoy, and I look forward to becoming your dentist at Railroad Dental Associates. In my personal time, one of my favorite actrivites is sailing. In Okinawa and San Diego, I enjoyed great sailing weather year-round. Although year-round sailing might not be possible in Virginia, I look forward to sailing here in the summers. I also enjoy traveling, cycling, hiking, skiing, and watching Michigan football. Go Blue!
